Abstract
This paper presents the problem of identifying who clients are in the context of a federally funded contract research project for women with AIDS. During the course of the research, researchers must report back to the government every six months how many clients they have served. Yet among the staff of the HIV Women's Study (HWS), disagreements have arisen in terms of who the true clients are and who can be billed for services rendered. Competing perspectives of staff members are framed according to Stone's work on identity. Stone (1962) discusses the relational context of two axes along which qualifications of identity are discussed, and the results from this primary research are placed within Stone's grid and discussed in terms of the concepts presented in his article.
