Although initially described in experimental models and patients with cancer, accumulations of MDSC have also been found in other pathological conditions such as chronic/acute infections, autoimmune diseases and different types of stress. In all these situations MDSC may play their physiological role by modulating normal immune responses, both adaptive and innate. The mechanisms of action of MDSC are diverse requiring either cell to cell contact or the release of soluble factors.
