Abstract

Objectives

In the field of dental impaction, particular attention has recently been focused on problems related to the non-eruption of the molars. The aim of this report is to provide clinicians with useful information for immediate management of this condition.

Materials and methods

After a preliminary review of the mechanisms underlying eruption and eruption-related disorders, the authors examine in detail epidemiological, pathogenetic, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of impacted molars. This is followed by a review of the literature on the disimpaction procedures and an analysis of the personal experience of the authors.

Results and Conclusions

Accurate knowledge of the etiopathogenetic mechanisms and careful monitoring allow prompt diagnosis and treatment of these disorders, which increase the likelihood of successful outcomes.
