Abstract
Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) on the electrical activity of the masticator muscles (masseter and anterior temporalis) by means of electromyography and to report the case of a young patient who underwent electromyography before and after RPE activation.
Materials and methods
Description of the case and the objectives of the different electromyographic scans performed.
Results
Analysis of pre- and post-RPE electromyographic data showed that palatal expansion was followed by bilateral increases in the electrical activity (resting and during the exam-related exercises) of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles.
Conclusions
The authors discuss factors that can influence the electrical activity of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles. Analysis of the electromyographic data confirms the strong correlation between the activity of these muscles and RPE, which increases the tone of the muscles at rest and during electromyographic exercises.
