Abstract

The infrared spectra of samples of fresh and weathered crude petroleum were interpreted. Infrared absorbance ratios of the three characteristic absorption bands in the 1375–1600 cm-1 region were chosen for differentiation of the crude oil samples. Applicability of the infrared technique for passive tagging of oil is also assessed.
