Clinical microbiology in the 1990s: Emerging pathogens and the role of the fluoroquinolones

Abstract

Clearly, the fluoroquinolones have great potential for becoming as useful a class of antimicrobial agents as the β-lactams. In particular, their use in difficult-to-treat infections as discussed above is likely to be of tremendous importance. As the 1990s progress, additional in vitro and in vivo data will become available. This information should ultimately confirm or deny the clinical usefulness of this exciting new class of antibiotics.
