The CIA: Its history, organization, functions, and publications

Abstract

This article briefly discusses the historical development of the CIA and President Carter's reorganization of the intelligence community in 1978. The authors describe the organizational structure of the CIA, and the duties, responsibilities and activities of its major offices. In addition to examining the past relationship of the CIA to the publishing activities of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service and the Joint Publications Research Service, the article reviews the difficulties of identifying CIA documents. An extensive bibliography of CIA publications is included.
