She studied oil painting in Kyoto Seika University from 1992 to 1996. After 1997, she studied at Braunschweig University of Art and University of the Arts Berlin. She lived in Germany after that (Yoshimoto 2014). Shiota Chiharu’s art includes installation art, performance, and images, and it usually examines intangible themes, such as memory, anxiety, dreams, and silence. Her works have been exhibited in institutions worldwide, including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the Art Gallery of South Australia, MoMA PS1, New York, Power Station of Art, Shanghai, National Museum of Art, Osaka, Freerand Sackler Galleries of Art, Washington D.C, K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, D€ usseldorf, etc. Her works have also appeared in important international exhibitions, including Biennale of Sydney, Setouchi Triennale, Kwangju Art Biennale, etc. In 2015, Shiota Chiharu participated in the 56th La Biennale di Venezia on behalf of Japan.
