Aint Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: Black LGBT Sociopolitical Involvement

Abstract:Over the past decade, progress in the social and political climate among LGBT Americans has been impressive. However, are all subgroups experiencing that process equally? More specifically, for example, what is the sociopolitical involvement of Black LGBT people within the mainstream (White) community? Using a national sample of LGBT Black people (N=1,363), this article examines the relative importance of a variety of characteristics in understanding Black LGBT respondent's sociopolitical involvement. Hierarchical regression modeling revealed that being comfortable within the larger LGBT community, gender, age, sexual identity, and relationship status all proved to be significant. The implications of these findings are discussed regarding future research with Black LGBT populations.
