The Silver Seal Matrix of John de Wike Found in Bratton Seymour Parish, Somerset

Abstract

This note examines a silver seal matrix set with a very remarkable Roman gem showing the youthful Octavian wearing the petasus (a sunhat with broad brim) of Mercury. From the inscription it belonged to John de Wike. The gem was probably set in the matrix in the late 13th or early 14th century. This note discusses the name of the owner and the design of the gem.
