In this context, university governance plays a fundamental role in obtaining superior results. However, there are aspects that affect its functioning from a systemic perspective. Strategic alignment, as a management principle put into practice in different organizations, provides an opportunity for theoretical-methodological integration that contributes to the better functioning of the higher education system. The purpose of this reflection article is to argue for the integration of strategic alignment into the practice of university governance as a principle that guarantees better results for the benefit of society. The methodological paradigm used is the qualitative one. The research is deductive, from an analytical, systemic and flexible perspective. The methods used are analysis and synthesis. Abstract

The higher education system faces new challenges that demand significant efforts to ensure its adequate performance, which contributes to social relevance.
