Abstract

Industrial waste water contains various contaminants such as acids, bases, dissolved solids, toxic compounds, and organic dyes. Methyl orange is one of the dyes that are often used in paper, plastic, food and textile industries that can produce harmful waste for the environment. The recent technologies of wastewater treatment are not able to completely eliminate recalcitrant azo dyes. The main component in biomass which is responsible for the adsorption process is polymers: cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Banana peel contains lignocellulose, so it can be used as biosorbent in the biosorption process. The purpose of research is to know the concentration of methyl orange substances on various treatment variations; the removal efficiency of biosorbent; and the optimum condition of the process of adsorption methyl orange. This study used a Factorial Completely Randomized Design with two factors, adsorbent dose and contact time. The sample used is the sample of 50 ppm synthetic methyl orange waste. The characteristics of banana peel were analyzed using FTIR. The adsorbent dose, contact time, and their interaction had a significant effect on the final concentration of methyl orange. The optimum condition of methyl orange adsorption occurred at 120 minutes contact time and 1 g adsorbent dose.
