Abstract

I’ve been interested in the definition of the notion of the phenomenon comprehensively called ornament for a long time. I think that a review of the cultural turns connected to ornament with-in the history of visual culture is an exciting and topical issue. What does ornament mean after Modernism and following the Postmodern period? Does it have a peculiar trait characteristic of contemporary architecture? The culture of ornamentation as decoration of the surface which was present in different eras and cultures became a decisive factor in Europe and the Anglo-Saxon world once again during the Art Nouveau period. During Modernism, this tendency, along with the use of ornament as embellishment lost its significance, while during Postmodernism, and subsequently in contemporary architecture images and patterns have reappeared once again.
