Abstract

the many legal restrictions that aimed to keep women in a subordinate position within the family structure and society. Delmedico investigates case studies of lawsuits brought about by women as attempts to improve their personal situations but also as a means of challenging society and its commonplaces. This volume brings to light the efforts of ordinary nineteenth-century women in Italy to resist the limiting roles imposed upon them by the society and legal framework of their time, in doing so they paved the way for the legal battles of women of later generations.
