Abstract

abstract:Drawing on results from an online survey of the mobility of people who grew up in Nebraska, this research situates itself within emerging scholarship on the intersection of gender and residential decision-making by addressing which factors are considered most important among women and men in the decision to stay in, leave, or return to the rural Great Plains. The results of the survey show that the rural Great Plains is a place that people happily choose to stay in or return to, and one that is missed by many who leave it. At the same time, the female–male contrast shown in the survey results reveals that the mobility of the region's women and men is generally dictated by two separate sets of factors, family and work.
