How Will I Know If (S)He Really Loves Me? An Analysis of Romantic Relationship Concerns in Ghanaian Print Media Advice Columns, 2000–2016

Abstract

abstract :Advice columns disseminate life dilemmas in a public forum for problem-solving. They provide readers’ entertainment and education, including about how to navigate romantic relationships. Thematic examination of 283 advice column articles published between 2000 and 2016 in two widely circulating Ghanaian newspapers was conducted to explore: (1) the scope of romantic relationship problems, and (2) the messages being transmitted about relationships, sexuality, and love. The articles comprised the following topics: (1) Commitment, (2) Communication, (3) Culture, (4) Socioeconomic Concerns; and (5) Violence. Agency and tension in relationships, the representation of romantic love, and other implications are discussed.
