Abstract

The market for new reference works this year resembles the earth after the water has evaporated. Some species have adapted to climate change while others, especially recent reprints from earlier epochs, have no more value than desiccated fish. In recent years the “four Gs” of reference publishers (Gale, Greenwood, Garland, and G. K. Hall) have been superseded by an almost entirely new generation of presses (Taylor & Francis, Rowman & Littlefield, Gale Cengage, and Cambridge). Many reference tools germane to this chapter, moreover, appear both in print and online and are increasingly focused on issues of race, ethnicity, and gender.
