Abstract

In the speech of Aeneas that follows his arrival in Africa (Aen. I, 198-207), the mention of Scylla and Charybdis, which is absent in the Homeric model, could be regarded as an allusion to a different version of the errores. The Danieline addition ad Aen. I, 198, the frequent connection between the overcoming of the strait’s dangers and the storm leading the Trojans to Carthage, and the comparison with the route of the exiles in Ovid’s ‘little Aeneid’ suggests that ll. 200-201 may contain an echo of the Bellum Poenicum, as proposed by D’Anna for ll. 204-206.
