Abstract

ABSTRACT The article analyzes the work carried out by the humanist Francisco Cervantes de Salazar in a volume printed by Juan de Brocar in Alcalá de Henares in 1546 in which the future chronicler of the Cabildo of Mexico City edits, glosses and translates three important plays by the Spanish Renaissance prose: the Dialogue of the Dignity of Man, by Hernán Pérez de Oliva, which he edits and continues, the Introduction for Wisdom, by Juan Luis Vives, which he notes and translates, and the Apologue on Idleness and Work, by Luis Mexía, which he edits and glosses for the first time. The article focuses on the characteristics of the edited works and on the strategies that the humanist uses with each of them to send to press a unique volume in Spanish Renaissance prose, and which clearly exemplifies the study work by XVI century humanists—fundamental to better understand the literature of the Golden Age.
