Collection management in the cloud: a guide for using cloud computing technologies in libraries (Library and Information Technology Association (LITA Guides))

Abstract

This book examines the use of cloud-based technology to manage library collections. It is aimed at collection development librarians and explores several popular cloud-based technologies such as Google Forms, Google Sheets and Tableau to see how they can be integrated into the library workplace. A range of factors are considered, including versatility, functionality, pricing, and data security, focusing on technologies libraries can a ff ord to implement, or alternatively, utilising existing corporate subscriptions. The authors are practising collection management librarians. Kayla Kipps is the collection development librarian at College of Charleston Libraries, managing physical and electronic content. Allison Kaiser Jones is the electronic resources and serials librarian at the same institution. The book begins with an overview of collection managements activitiesand cloud-based technology, and an examination of the technology ’ s broader role within the library. The advantages and disadvantages of using cloud-based technology are discussed. Subsequent chapters focus on topics integral to collection management and the appropriate cloud-based tools for those activi-ties using Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). There are examples to demonstrate how various cloud-based tools are implemented in libraries. Topics covered in chapters include data storage, data management, data visualisation, project management, communications, and library management systems, using the examples of Ex Libris Alma, Koha, and FOLIO. The authors close with thoughts on how cloud-based technologies will shape libraries into the future. The book also contains a glossary of terms, a com-prehensive list of references for future study, and a detailed index.
