Abstract

The identification of the isolation degree of an island territory becomes relevant for the management and planning of a geographical space. This study identifies and compares the isolation degree in insular territories. To this end, we worked with 10 communes in the province of Chiloe (Chile), being these the spatial units of analysis. It was applied a methodology based on the subdere proposal in 2012, where the used variables are the presence of public services (education and health) and connectivity (transport and virtual communication). This methodology can be applied in other insular regions, considering the possibility of requiring the incorporation of other variables associated with the economic dimension and the perception of the population to be studied. As a result, the research shows that among the analyzed communes, the most isolated are Puqueldon, Curaco de Velez, Dalcahue, and Quemchi, being the access to connectivity the main variable. Finally, it is determined that isolation plays an important role in the development of the socio-territorial activities of the population.Main ideas: Research article determining the degree of isolation of island territories on a communal scale. It compares variables related to the existence of and access to virtual communication services, transport, health and education. Identified about 10 communes in the province of Chiloe (Chile) and the most isolated are Puqueldon, Curaco de Velez, Dalcahue and Quemchi.
