Carlos II y su hechizo. Crónica y leyenda de un rey inacabado = Carlos II and his Bewitch. Chronicle and Legend of an Unfinished King

Abstract

Este trabajo propone una reflexion sobre la imagen de Carlos II, en la historiografia hispana pero especialmente en la anglosajona y sobre el impacto que ha tenido en los estudios de las relaciones internacionales del periodo. El proposito del articulo no es sistematizar la renovada imagen historiografica que se tiene del reinado, sino subrayar que en esa renovada imagen se contienen suficientes pistas, sugerencias e indicios como para que resulte significativa la desatencion biografica del monarca y que la vision de el se mantenga apegada a una comprension forjada cuando los parametros de comprension de su tiempo historico y de su reinado eran radicalmente distintos y sin duda mas pobres que los que ahora se disponen. Asi, su principal conclusion es que es necesario afrontar un analisis politico de la figura de Carlos II incorporando dichas actualizaciones, y sobre todo hacerlo desde su propio contexto material e ideologico. Abstract This paper proposes a reflection on the image of Carlos II, in the Spanish historiography but especially in the Anglo-Saxon one and on the impact that it has had in the studies on the international relations of the period. The purpose of the article is not to systematize the renewed historiographic image of the reign, but rather to emphasize that in this renewed image there are enough clues, suggestions and indications that the biographical neglect of the monarch is significant and that the vision of him is maintained attached to an understanding forged when the parameters of understanding of his historical time and his reign were radically different and undoubtedly poorer than those now available. Thus, its main conclusion is that it is necessary to face a political analysis of the figure of Carlos II incorporating these updates, and above all to do it from its own material and ideological context.
