“Thamaris, mujer griega e noble por la industria de sus manos e de su ingenio”: la traducción castellana de la biografía boccaccesca de una pintora

Abstract

On October the 24 th , 1494, a volume entitled De las mujeres illustres en romance , a Castilian translation of Boccaccio’s De mulieribus claris , was published at Pablo Hurus’s press in Zaragoza. This incunabulum, which contains 103 of the 106 biographies of the Latin work and takes as its source text the ms. lat. 10000 of the Spanish National Library, emerges as the only Spanish translation of the collection of biographies of exemplary women composed by the Italian author until the 21 st century. This work presents the edition and study of one of its most innovative biographies, the one narrating the life of the Greek painter Tamaris, example of a relevant typology of female character, capable of achieving glory and fame thanks to her own skills.
