Abstract
The socio-discursive construction of the identity of Latin American immigrants in Barcelona Abstract In identifying, constructing, understanding, enforcing and negotiating identity (personal, collective, social and cultural identity), the speech has a paramount impact. The subject, the self, is a socio-historical and ideological subject. It is a self permeated by social, cultural, historical and ideological elements, having to talk of a multidimensional, fluid, contingent and decentered self (Castoriadis, 1989; Revilla, 2003: 55). This paper aims to identify and analyze the socio-discursive construction of the identity of Latin American immigrants in Barcelona, from the perspective of enunciation, social constructionist psychology and through the discourse produced in four discussion groups. This work belongs to a greater scope research on socio-cultural integration of Latin American immigrants in three different cities: Barcelona, New York and Los Angeles. It takes as its starting point an empirical, qualitative and phenomenological methodology. The relevance and the purpose of the present work is to report the significance of identity for immigrants in new sociocultural contexts, to observe how these new contexts affect the construction of the identity and determine immigrants’ behavior, sensitivities and their ways of being and doing in the host society. The results of this study allow to understand that the socio-discursive construction of identity is concretized through modes of identification between relational, categorical and unbroken continuity logic. Key words: Discourse, speech, Identity, Latin American, Migration.
