Abstract

Published by the Harvard-Yenching Institute HJAS 82.1 (2022): 187–193 not to be overshadowed by Ottoman, Russian, or even Chinese and English. Future studies of the Manchu language must take into account the extended parameters that Söderblom Saarela has established. My only criticism of this book is that it tells only a partial biography of Manchu. Readers should hope that Söderblom Saarela will consider giving commensurate attention to how Manchu has lived on, through international scholarship and learners who are not heritage speakers, in the twentieth century and the present age in another monographlength work.
