Abstract
Glycosylated hemoglobin (GHb) is routinely used to monitor glycemic control over past 2-3 months in diabetics. As per the recommendations of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist, 2007 values should be maintained below 7% to prevent the risk of chronic complications. We report a case of a 55-year old female patient with spuriously low HbA1c values by high-performance liquid chromatography. Suspecting the presence of any abnormal hemoglobin, capillary zone electrophoresis was done which identified the presence of Hb variant corresponding to -Hb N Seattle. Our case highlights that clinical laboratories should be aware of limitations of their HbA1c assay methods as well as rule out any possible interfering Hb variants.
Glycosylated hemoglobin (GHb) is Routinely used to monitor glycomic control over past 2-3 months in diamonds As per the recommendations of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, 2007 values should be maintained below 7% to prevent the risk of chronic complications We report a case of a 55 year old female patient with sharp low HbA1c values by high performance liquid chromatography Suspecting the presence of any abnormal hemisphere, capillary zone electrophoresis was done which identified the presence of Hb variant responding to - Hb N Seat Our case highlights that clinical laboratories should be aware of limitations of their HbA1c assessment methods as well as rules out of any possible inference Hb variables Glycosylated hemoglobin (GHB) is routinely used to monitor blood glucose control in the past 2-3 months in diabetes. According to the 2007 recommendation of the American Society of Clinical Endocrinologists, this value should be maintained below 7% to prevent the risk of chronic complications. We report a case of a 55 year old female patient using high-performance liquid chromatography to determine a false low HbA1c value. Due to suspicion of the presence of some abnormal hemoglobin, we performed capillary zone electrophoresis and identified the presence of Hb variants corresponding to - Hb N Seattle. Our case emphasizes that clinical laboratories should be aware of the limitations of their HbA1c measurement method and exclude any Hb variants that may cause interference.
