Abstract

A new species of Parapharyngiella Willems, Artois, Vermin, Backeljau & Schockaert, 2005, Parapharyngiella caribbaea n. sp., is described from Cuba. It differs from Parapharyngiella involucrum Willems, Artois, Vermin, Backeljau & Schockaert, 2005, the only other species in this genus, by a much more posterior position of the pharynx, indicating that the anterior position of the pharynx is not a diagnostic character for the genus. It also differs in the sclerotized copulatory organ having a protuberance that is longer than the mantle. A morphological reassessment of the two known populations of P. involucrum (Zanzibar and Spain) reveals that these populations differ in many details, indicating that they belong to two different species. The population from Spain, therefore, is considered a separate species: Parapharyngiella steenkistei n. sp. Moreover, Proxenetes mackfirae Karling, 1978 is transferred to the genus Parapharyngiella. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A78F4971-7193-461B-B161-99D2DB9D531A
http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:A78F4971-7193-461B-B161-99D2DB9D531A

Tropical Zoology is an international zoological journal publishing original papers in the field of systematics, biogeography, phylogeny, ecology and conservation of all terrestrial and aquatic animal Phyla from tropical and subtropical areas. Only papers with new information, high quality and broad interest are considered. Single species description and checklists are not normally accepted. Review papers are welcome. The journal is owned by the Istituto di Ricerca sugli Ecosistemi Terrestri of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Florence, Italy (CNR-IRET) who performs research into the structure and functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, focusing in particular on anthropogenic pressure and global change. The knowledge amassed forms the scientific basis for identifying the most appropriate protective and corrective interventions, and provides support for the bodies entrusted with formulating policies for environmental protection and recovery.
