Abstract

The most important source to know how the Visigothic army was in the second half of the seventh century is the Historia Wambae of Julian de Toledo, literary and rhetoric work created for greater aggrandizement of King Wamba, but which provides us with unique information about the military campaigns of this monarch, the one who confronted him with the Basques and, especially, the one he brought against the rebel Paulo. The author is not satisfied with exalting the king, his detailed account is an exceptional testimony about the strategic development of a late army in the countryside and a unique document to know the structure and behavior of the Visigothic armies; as well as the ceremonial associated with war and victory.
