Abstract

The present study reviews the literature on the relationship between therapeutic alliance (TA) and success of the psychological treatment of a major depressive episode. A literature search was conducted using electronic databases (Psycinfo, PubMed and PsykArticle). In total, 13 studies were selected according to the inclusion criteria. This association persisted on considering different measures such as psychometric instruments or clinical variables (e.g., risk of relapse or dropout from therapy). Contradictory results are found as to whether the type of therapy influences this association. In conclusion, correct TA is essential in order to achieve good psychotherapeutic outcomes in the treatment of depression.
