Chinese Heritage Sites and Their Audiences: The Power of the Past

Abstract

by providing an in-depth study of local stakeholders ’ understandings of heritage and the in fl uences of tourism at the local level in a non-Western context. fi cally, counter to much of the mainstream heritage literature, which largely sees tourism presenting problems for heritage management, ’ s analysis shows that, in the context of West Lake and Xidi and Hongcun, locals largely considered tourists as a positive impact to their lives, and elicited a sense of pride by making them being aware of their own culture.
