Hvem eier Jeanne d’Arc? Fra helgen til politisk symbol

Abstract

2020 marks the 100 th anniversary of the canonization of Joan of Arc. Despite her affiliation with the Catholic Church, politicians from left and right have tried to make her their own icon. This article takes a closer look at how Joan of Arc has been used as a nation builder and as a symbol by different actors in French politics throughout history, and what role she plays today. The article illustrates that canonization does not take place in a political vacuum. A saint is the-refore not only a Christian role model, but can also serve as a potent and ambiguous political symbol.
