Abstract

Few things are as interesting as seeing how people in the past imagined the future. ‘France in the Year 2000’ is one example. A series of paintings by Jean-Marc Côté, produced for the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. The paintings were in the form of small cards, meant to be placed in cigar boxes, and humorously depicted what life would look like in our millennium. Many visions never materialized, such as scuba divers riding huge seahorses and winged police constables controlling airborne traf-fic. Others did.
