Abstract
In the early days of the Transicion, several nationalist left political forces appeared in Mallorca. Amongst them, only one became consolidated, the Partit Socialista de Mallorca –PSM–, which lasted for decades and amassed a considerable social, cultural and political influence. And yet, it failed badly at obtaining representation in the Spanish Court. However, it won some representation in the pre-autonomic bodies and, subsequently, in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. Likewise, it became a noteworthy political force in the local elections of 1979 and 1983. Furthermore, in these elections, there were a considerable number of independent candidatures that can be considered, to a varying degree, close to the nationalist left.
