Abstract

A theoretical model of the spreading of an oleine slick based on the laws of conservation of mass and total energy of the system is presented. Based on this model, an approximate equation describing the spreading process at each time point is derived. Compact solutions of this equation are presented both for engine-oil slicks of limited area and for unlimited spills of crude oil. Experiments are conducted to study the dynamics of the spreading of a compact slick of reference engine oil and crude oil under various physical conditions. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical results show their good agreement for all dynamic modes of the process under study.
