THE FRAGMENTATION OF MMS-TREATED DNA WAS DEPENDENT ON THE PRESENCE OF CA++ AND MG++ IONS, AND WAS NOT OBSERVED UPON TREATMENT WITH DIVALENT ION CHELATORS SUCH AS EDTA OR EGTA. THE CA++ AND MG++ -DEPENDENT CONVERSION OF MMS-TREATED SUPERCOILED PLASMID PREVIOUSLY REACTED WITH CHO CELL NUCLEAR EXTRACT TO OPEN CIRCULAR FORM WAS MARKEDLY INCREASED IN A 3-AMINOBENZAMIDE (3-AB) DOSE-DEPENDENT MANNER AS DETERMINED BY AGAROSE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS AND DENSITOMETRIC ANALYSIS.
