Lung abscess following aseptic pulmonary embolism

Abstract

Three cases are reported in which a single lung abscess developed following repeated pulmonary embolism. Reasons are given for regarding the emboli as initially aseptic, staphylococcal infection occurring secondarily via the bronchi. The literature is briefly reviewed and the suggestion made that aseptic pulmonary embolism should be considered as a possible ˦tiological factor in cases of lung abscess.
