Abstract

"Nominal data from ships' manifests provide systematic and reliable data on migrants of [earlier periods]. Analyzing two samples of such manifests, one involving Italian immigrants, the other Russian immigrants in the United States, the structural characteristics of the family, social networks in the communities of origin and destination, sex, age, and marital status as well as literacy and occupation are revealed."
