The formation of the dispersed Tatar component in the population of St. Petersburg-Leningrad.

Abstract

The author examines the origin of the Tatar component in the population of Leningrad and the ethnic processes occurring there from the late nineteenth century to the present. Patterns of Tatar migration during the past 50 years are examined in detail, with a focus on the area of origin and the ethnic consciousness of migrants. The Tatars are characterized according to occupational, cultural, religious, economic, and social elements. The extent to which these characteristics affected the movement and development of the Tatar population in St. Petersburg-Leningrad is analyzed. Data are from various archival and statistical sources and from ethno-sociological surveys of Leningrad's Tatars.
