Type I and II carcinoids develop through a histologically recognizable sequence: hyperplasia-dysplasia-neoplasia. Their pathogenesis depends on the combined action of promoting agents, mostly hypergastrinaemia, and of transforming agents, the role of which is currently under investigation. Their prognosis is generally favourable.
