Mental health and substance abuse disorders are as prevalent among Americans as disorders affecting physical health; therefore, no comprehensive health reform program can be enacted that does not include coverage for mental health services. While some fear the cost consequences, benefit costs of these services have actually grown more slowly than for those of general medicine.
