Abstract

We have been engaged in studies of the structure and condensation of chromatin into the 30 nm filament using small-angle neutron scattering. We have also used deuterated histone H1 to determine its location in the chromatin 30 nm filament. Our studies indicate that chromatin condenses with increasing ionic strength to a limiting structure that has a mass per unit length of 6-7 nucleosomes/11 nm.
