Cranial measurements in the Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus).

Abstract

The skulls of 36 adult arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) of known sexes were measured in two Canadian subspecies. Significant differences (P less than or equal to 0.05) were found within and between the sexes of the two subspecies of arctic foxes. The identification of sexes is easier in the subspecies innuitus than in the subspecies groenlandicus. When the sexes of both subspecies are considered, the distinction between innuitus and groenlandicus becomes much more difficult.
