Abstract
We have all heard the explanations from vaping supporters about why e-cigarettes are preferable socially to nicotine replacement therapy, like patches. The key is “socially.” They like to “smoke” with friends, as they did with combustible cigarettes. However, there may be another reason: recent research has found that even everyday vaping delivers much more nicotine than was expected. Rochester Institute of Technology researchers found that everyday vaping is more potent than users anticipated. The work of Risa Robinson and colleagues will contribute to better testing. “We are looking for key indicators of harm and addiction,” said Robinson. “We have these for smoking; it is well understood. But vaping differs quite a bit from traditional cigarette smoking. We aim to mimic the natural use behaviors of vaping. We want lab testing to better represent the real world.” Vapers inhale more deeply to get more of the nicotine — and it “works.” Is vaping more addictive than smoking?
