Abstract
Bandgap alteration at grain boundaries (GBs) in inorganic materials can significantly impact their practical applications. This study probes GBs in four inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs), γ-Li3PO4, Na3Zr2Si2PO12, Li3YCl6 and Li7La3Zr2O12, and uncovers bandgap-coordination number relationships more complex than those noted in prior investigations. Over-coordination and under-coordination are seen to simultaneously occur in multiple chemical species at GBs, with atoms of the same chemical species exhibiting these modifications to different extents. We find features based on coordination numbers to provide insights into GB bandgap variations in the four ISEs. High-dimensional machine-learned representations of atomistic GB models are used to uncover these GB coordination-bandgap associations, and density functional theory-based density of states evaluations are then used to rationalize the findings.
期刊介绍:
Acta Materialia serves as a platform for publishing full-length, original papers and commissioned overviews that contribute to a profound understanding of the correlation between the processing, structure, and properties of inorganic materials. The journal seeks papers with high impact potential or those that significantly propel the field forward. The scope includes the atomic and molecular arrangements, chemical and electronic structures, and microstructure of materials, focusing on their mechanical or functional behavior across all length scales, including nanostructures.
