Abstract

Autotransplantation is a predictable treatment option to replace a missing tooth. In growing children, this treatment has the advantages that the development of the alveolar process is not hindered and that a donor tooth with an undeveloped apex is often available, ensuring the tooth remains vital after transplantation and endodontic treatment is not necessary. Child-specific considerations include the sometimes-limited cooperation of a young child, which can make treatment more difficult to perform for the oral healthcare provider. Additionally, treatment can be a potentially traumatic experience for the child, and compliance can be unpredictable due to, for example, suboptimal oral hygiene. With proper indication, care and attention to supportive language, the treatment can proceed as smoothly as possible for (young) children as well.
