Abstract
This study analyzes changes in the structural and dynamic properties of natural water during treatment for domestic and industrial use. Typical subhourly, daily, and longer multiday fluctuations in time series of turbidity, which characterizes the reduced transparency of natural water caused by suspended inorganic and organic matter of various origins, as well as those of conditioned water after coagulation and filtration, were studied. Possible cause-and-effect relationships persisting between the monitored parameters during water treatment were examined. The analysis revealed inheritance of such time-series properties as increased variability, quasi-cyclic behavior, structural shifts, volatility clustering, and long memory. The results improve the ability to assess changes in the empirical distribution functions of turbidity, predict its values for conditioned water, and reduce the volatility of the monitored parameters over a limited time interval.
