Abstract
The necessity of selective mining of perlite rock in thin extraction layers homogeneous in average density has been demonstrated to obtain homogeneous perlite raw material capable of ensuring stable and reproducible properties of expanded perlite and products manufactured from it. The relationship between the properties of the rock, expanded perlite, and products based on it confirms the need to replace conventional perlite mining by drilling, blasting, and excavation with a new selective mining approach. The classification of perlite raw material into narrow particle-size fractions specified by GOST 25226–96 also fails to ensure complete homogeneity of the feed supplied for expansion because of the presence of rock varieties with different densities within the deposit. It should be noted that the proportions of porous, slightly porous, and dense rock varieties vary from one mining area to another.
