Abstract
The extraction of a pre-oxidized straight-run diesel fraction using the ionic liquid [BMIM][BF4] was studied. The preliminary oxidation step was carried out with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of molybdic acid. This treatment is required to convert sulfides into polar sulfoxides, thereby enabling their selective extraction with the ionic liquid [BMIM][BF4]. At a straight-run diesel fraction:ionic liquid volume ratio of 2 : 1 and 30°C, the sulfur content was reduced to <0.05 wt %, corresponding to a sulfur removal efficiency of up to 96%. The effect of extraction duration on the efficiency of organic sulfur removal was also evaluated. The results demonstrate a reduction in the total sulfur content to a level meeting the IMO 2020 requirements (not more than 0.5 wt %).
