Abstract
Background: Strawberry gingivitis is a characteristic but under-recognised oral manifestation of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), with potential for long-term sensory damage often overlooked.
Case presentation: A 60-year-old woman with strawberry gingivitis, cough, and hearing loss fulfilled the 2022 ACR/EULAR classification criteria for GPA (score 13), with the diagnosis established through integrated clinical, serological, radiological, and histopathological assessment. Induction therapy resolved the oral lesions, but 18-month follow-up showed bilateral deafness and blindness.
Conclusions: Strawberry gingivitis is a highly characteristic, though not pathognomonic, sign of GPA. Even with good short-term control, patients risk progressive sensory damage, emphasising the need for long-term follow-up.
期刊介绍:
The ultimate aim of Gerodontology is to improve the quality of life and oral health of older people. The boundaries of most conventional dental specialties must be repeatedly crossed to provide optimal dental care for older people. In addition, management of other health problems impacts on dental care and clinicians need knowledge in these numerous overlapping areas. Bringing together these diverse topics within one journal serves clinicians who are seeking to read and to publish papers across a broad spectrum of specialties. This journal provides the juxtaposition of papers from traditional specialties but which share this patient-centred interest, providing a synergy that serves progress in the subject of gerodontology.
