Abstract
Pipelines, as important fluid transportation vessels, are extensively used in our modern society. Although numerous nano energy harvesters (EHs) have been reported in recent decades, few focus on developing the pipeline-oriented nanogenerator. This study proposes a mini turbine-based axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) PCB nanogenerator with a bridgeless rectifier for pipeline energy harvesting. Firstly, an AFPM PCB generator with a winding PCB stator is proposed with a compact design to transfer the hydraulic energy to electricity. A designed mini Kaplan turbine blade is used to drive the AFPM PCB nanogenerator. Secondly, an asymmetrical bridgeless AC-DC converter as an interface circuit is proposed without the conventional diode bridge to achieve relatively high power conversion efficiency. Simulations of the PCB nanogenerator and bridgeless converter are conducted by different software to check and optimize relevant designs. Test results indicate that the proposed nanogenerator can steadily output 3.4 W power (power density 4 mW/cm3) and the overall designed EH system can deliver 87 mW of stable output power with its turbine blade driven by a 1.2 m height water reservoir.
